General Questions

In this section you'll find answers to general questions about the group and the way it operates.

Who are the Leicester Local YHA Group?

The Leicester local YHA Group began its independent life In 1954, although its roots go back at least as far as 1934. We are a gradually expanding, friendly, informal group of people who enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities and a number of indoor ones too. Group members come from all walks of life and ages range from pre teenage to over 65.

What do you do?

We have a varied and full programme of events. Members of our Group have a primary Interest of walking in the countryside but we get up to all kinds of things, all over the place. About twice each month we go away for the weekend and stay in a Youth Hostel. These trips are usually in Great Britain but we do travel abroad sometimes. Usually on the Sundays that people are not away at a Youth Hostel we have a local walk. During the week we tend to relax over a pint and a meal or watch a play. Our Social events are as varied as anybody's suggestions.

Where do you meet?

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the Western pub on Western Road, near to Bede Park and De Montfort Uuniversity (see map below). The meetings are very informal: Just a chat over a pint and a chance to sign up for events you want to take part in. Not all our events are in the programme so it is a good idea to come along on a Wednesday so you can to find out what you are missing. There are usually a number of people there by 9:00pm. You can just turn up and, if you are unsure who we are, ask the bar staff.

Are you part of the YHA?

The group is officially termed a "hostelling and local group" affiliated to, but not part of, the YHA. This status offers certain advantages, such as insurance and some free hostel overnights, but leaves us free to organise our own affairs. Whilst most of our weekend trips make use of YHA hostels, we can and do make use of independent hostels and bunkhouses too.
